The resurgence of mining and mineral exploration in Europe remains a critical issue, particularly in light of escalating trade disputes and the disruption of essential raw materials and energy supplies from China, Russia, and Ukraine. Europe’s ability to successfully transition to a green economy, combat climate change, and maintain industrial competitiveness—especially in sectors like automotive and energy—depends on securing vital minerals and metals.
The 8th MINEX Europe Forum, held on 22-23 October 2024 in Prague, Czech Republic, provided a neutral platform for an open dialogue on the challenges and potential solutions facing the mining and mineral exploration sector. The Forum focused on the role of the industry in meeting Europe’s demand for essential metals and minerals while promoting best practices in mining and post-mining reconciliation.
The Forum brought together stakeholders involved in developing Critical Raw Materials projects in countries such as Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Finland, France, Norway, Portugal, Kosovo, Serbia, Spain, Slovakia and Ukraine.
Over 40 speakers from 38 organisations offered insights into the practical impacts of proposed reforms to revitalise Europe’s mining and supply chains. The discussions also addressed the regulatory, financial, social, environmental, and technological challenges that often impede promising projects and opportunities.
Following the Forum, attendees visited DIAMO, a state-funded agency responsible for post-uranium mining remediation in the Czech Republic. This visit highlighted the country’s experience in uranium mining and environmental rehabilitation, offering a valuable case study for the global mining industry on balancing economic activities with environmental protection and sustainable development.
Looking ahead, the 9th MINEX Europe Mining and Exploration Forum is scheduled to take place in Portugal in October 2025. This event is particularly significant as Portugal is revising its mining legislation to attract investment in mineral exploration and to develop critical raw materials supply chains in collaboration with international partners.
